Mayfair 2018

Mayfair Chair

This year we celebrated the 73rd annual Mayfair in Rosedale Park. Since inception, Mayfair is a team effort and I want to thank the Mayfair Committee for their hard work of preparations for this year's event. You will see from the photos in this section, there were some cherished memories and highlights this year. However, there is also a shadow as a result of some unsettling disturbances on Friday evening that were not adequately prepared for. To all who were affected by those incidents, I am deeply sorry. We will do better next year.

As for some of this year's highlights, I want to thank our Friday night musicians - Governor Douglas. The band rocked and rolled with a wide selection of songs for all ages.

The food was once again outstanding. I received only one complaint - there weren't enough ribs! Thank you to our food sponsors as well as beverage providers for the great evening in the beer garden.

Saturday - a small but spirited parade arrived from the Moorevale Park during a brief morning drizzle but the smiles brought sunshine to the park. A new food option was introduced this year for the hungry travelers - the "maple bacon burrito" at the Breakfast Bistro. This was a well-received addition to Mayfair's Food Zone.

Track and Field, Kiddie Zone, Bouncies, Midway Games, Bingo, Fish Pond, Wacky Hair and Face Painting were all busy once again. Free fun included Gaga Ball, Little Green Thumbs (to plant a flower for Mother's Day), bean bag toss and general running and smiling after all that sugar from candy floss.

As usual, may people stopped by to chat with neighbours and friends. There were numerous families with representation from three generations. It was good to hear their stories and listen to the 'grandchildren' experience Mayfair for the first time.

The prize booth was busy all afternoon with kids cashing their prize coupons as they sifted through this year's selection of toys, hats and incredible bouncing balls.

Saturday's lunchtime kids concert was again provided by Celtic Sun, followed by an afternoon of rollicking pub music from Old Man Flanagan's Ghost. All this while the Food Zone turned out amazing Webers hamburgers, Maple Leaf Foods Greenfield all-natural Hot-Dogs, and even popular Neal Bros Chips, and Pic Nic drinks to the crowd.

Each year, Mayfair has two purposes: it's a fundraiser for Mooredale and also a neighbourhood fair that strengthens connections in our community. For many, Mayfair 2018 was enjoyable, but we need to ensure safety for all attendees to restore some peace of mind at Mayfair 2019.

Mayfair wouldn't be possible without an army of volunteers. There were hundreds of students, many of them earning their community service hours and an even greater number of adult volunteers. I appreciate that many were new volunteers, and some are loyal Mayfair "lifers!" Whether the volunteers were helping at the BBQ, selling tickets, working in the Treasury, setting up and taking down Mayfair, we had a fantastic group of people who made Mayfair happen.

I encourage you to be part of the team for Mayfair 2019, and call Mooredale at 416-922-3714, ext 310, or email volunteer@mooredale.on.ca.  We'd love to have you join us! Many hands make lighter work.

Details about Mayfair 2019 will be posted in January 2019.  For more general information please see the original information relating to Mayfair 2018, below.
