Friday Night Races

Beginning in May, Friday night is race night. Mooredale and four other community clubs participate in a 19-week race series. The basic principles are as follows:(a picture of the start line with over 40 boats)Only community club members sailing in club owned Albacores, using club owned equipment and community club members sailing their own or club Lasers are eligible for community club awards.

Each community club must use a random draw to select skipper and crew combinations.Privately owned Albacores are eligible for the private boat owner awards.Prizes for the Albacore class will be awarded to the top 5 community club boats and to the top private finishing boat in the top overall five finishing positions.

At the end of the season the perpetual trophies will be awarded to the first place community club Albacore skipper and crew. The awards will be based on the points scored in his/her best 5 races of the season. In the event of a tie, the award will go to the skipper or crew, with the most first, seconds, thirds etc. If this still fails to break a tie, then as many extra races as are necessary will be used to break the tie.

The highly coveted Spanish Donkey Award will be presented to the winning club that has the lowest total score of its best 8 placings of Albacores entered each week. If a tie exists the award will go to the club with the most first, seconds, thirds etc.

  1. The sign-up list is posted at least two weeks prior to the race.
  2. A random draw is used to match skipper with crew. The draw takes place a week before the race (usually on Wednesday or Monday before the race).
  3. If you are a substitute (which means you didn’t get drawn) and you show up you will be guaranteed a place in the following Friday's race (that is only if you didn’t sail).
  4. If you are unable to attend the race you must inform the Racing Officer before 6 pm on the night of the race. If you do not do this, your name will be removed from the next week’s draw.
  5. Boat Captains have first priority to their assigned boats for any Friday Night race for which they have been drawn and for any regatta. If there are more members wishing to sail in a regatta than there are boats available then a draw will be held. If a boat captain is drawn for the regatta then they have first priority on their assigned boat.

The races are held in the Outer Harbour or the Inner Harbour (between downtown and the Toronto Islands) depending on the host club.

  1. Two separate start sequences are run; one for Albacores and one for Lasers.
  2. After the race, the race results will be announced at a local bar. The top five community boats receive prizes.
