front_page_quadrants_learn_teresa
At Mooredale, we love sharing our passion for sailing. Our enthusiasm is quickly infectious for most new members. We love seeing  our students enjoying the thrill of sailing well and fast! For these reasons, we put together a sound teaching program unique to our club.

Learn to Sail
Our club welcomes his new members by offering them more than 40 hours of sailing lessons conform to the CYA (Canadian Yacht Association) standards and taught by our professional CYA certified instructors. This training, "Learn to Sail" program, will  cover safety, seamanship and boat handling in winds to 9 knots velocity and it will give you the sufficient theoretical knowledge and practical experience to obtain the CYA White Sail Level III Certificate.

There are four "Learn to Sail" sessions that run throughout the summer:

  • White Sail Saturdays during May-June
  • White Sail A during April-May
  • White Sail B during June
  • White Sail C during July
See White Sail Schedule for class hours and times.

While you are learning the basics of sailing in a friendly atmosphere, you will get familliar with the club and its members. You will also participate to different introductory programs, which include, an introduction to boat maintenance and repair involving fiberglass work, an introduction to racing which will be run by one of our top racer, and of course a full access to our clubhouse and its social activities.

Beyond White Sail Training

Once your White Sail III certificate in hand, which usually takes 4 weeks, you will be able to use our club boats,  learn boat specific seamanship, improve your sailing skills by casual sails or more organized training programs run by our members.

Learn through Racing

At Mooredale, we have a tradition of sharing sailing tips openly, which made our club the place to become a great sailor! One of the best way to improve your sailing skill tremendously and to get the full experience of sailing is to participate to our race training and racing events. We have the TOP racers here at Mooredale, and you will for sure get to know them and learn a lot from them!
  • Barrie Farrel: Friday Night Race Series Helm champion; Deborah Staiman: Friday Night Race Series Crew champion
  • Alimir Tavares & Christine: current B fleet U.S. Champion  and current B fleet Canadian Champion

Attendance to water safety is mandatory for all students. Please try to attend the session corresponding to your class.

Water Safety Night
water_safety-1Water Safety is an opportunity to explore the world of sailing … without swimming in the lake! We simulate common on-the-water activities in a controlled, lifeguard supervised environment BEFORE you experience the lake. This technique has proven to increase the competency and confidence of new sailors when encountering everyday hazards on the water. Some exercises you will perform are treading water, swimming with a life jacket, emergency line throwing, swimming out from under a sail and so on.

When?

At 7pm, on the following dates for the respective classes:

- Monday April 26th, Class A and S

- Tuesday May 25th, Class B

- Monday June 28th, Class C

Attendance to water safety is mandatory for all students. Please try to attend the session corresponding to your class.

Check the calendar for more information.

What to Wear to Water Safety Night?

For in the pool, we suggest light-weight pants or shorts, an old t-shirt, light-weight runners, wind water_safety-3breaker, etc., i.e. what you wear sailing (bathing suits are seldom worn). Bring your PFD, if you have one. Change facilities are available. Bring a towel!

PFD - Personal Floatation Device/Lifejacket
PFDs are always worn while sailing. Although the Club has some general use PDFs, during lessons there may not be enough to go around. It is recommended that you purchase your own PDF. Check the inside label to be sure it approved by Canada Coast Guard and it is sized correctly for your body weight. A PDF can be purchased for as cheap as $20-30 from Canadian Tire. Also, see Where to buy, following, for high performance models.

Advanced Lessons
sailing-4Bronze IV classes offer training in advanced skills. The prerequisites are White Sail III (or equivalent), and at least a full season of sailing, and assessment to demonstrate your skill level. This summer Mooredale is offering one Bronze IV session starting in August.

Boats

Boat ownership is not required when learning to sail or sailing at Mooredale Sailing Club. The club has a fleet of 18 Albacores, 6 Lasers and 1 Hobie cat.

view-2Albacores: Lessons are taken in Albacore boats. Albacores are 2-person boats that require a helm and a crew to sail. On completion of the White Sail Certificate you are able to helm (drive) the boat or crew the boat (work the sails etc.). Once a White Sail Certificate is achieved you can take out the club Albacore boats when you want, the use of boats is unlimited and at no extra cost.

Lasers: Lasers are 1-person boats. Laser sailing clinics are held periodically during the summer and are open to all Members who have completed White Sail. The clinics ensure that you are proficient in sailing a Laser and on completion you may take out a Laser if you choose.

Please visit our Club section for more information regarding our Fleet.
